Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s Love Story In Vanity FairPosted on: June 3, 2010 | Comments Off
I cannot wait to read this book. Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century was featured in the July issue of Vanity Fair and I am already so in love with this old-school celebrity couple that Brangelina may never hold the same charm for me again. Contributing editor Sam Kashner and co-author Nancy Schoenberger trace the arc of this epic, turbulent love affair, which appropriately began on the set of Cleopatra—a story about another romance for the ages, and one of the most expensive films ever made—and ended spectacularly with jealousy, anger, and divorce, despite the fact that Taylor and Burton never really fell out of love. Kashner and Schoenberger somehow managed to persuade Liz to allow them to publish tons of never-before-seen letters that her Richard wrote to her, and passages from many of the letters are included in the excerpt. In addition to demonstrating that Burton was a gifted, lyrical, playful writer who could effortlessly summon the beauty of the Shakespearean language he so loved, the correspondence reveals poignant and intimate truths about the power of the bond that Taylor and Burton shared—sexual, creative, and spiritual. ***Sigh**** He’s so dreamy**** This is a real love story ya’ll. Not Speidi, not TomKat….not Rob and Kristen…real love. Highlights from the excerpt include: • Taylor and Burton’s icy first encounter, on a balmy day at a star-studded Los Angeles pool party, and subsequent flirtation on the set of Cleopatra 10 years later, where director Joe Mankiewicz found it nearly impossible to break up their on-screen kiss well after the take had ended. • Their scandalous on-set affair and surprise wedding in Montreal, where they were hounded by paparazzi, and the turmoil they went through while divorcing their respective spouses. • The jewelry, artwork, and gifts that Burton lavished on Taylor as they took in millions of dollars from their films, including the 33.19-carat Krupp diamond, the 69.42-carat Cartier diamond, now known as the Taylor-Burton diamond, and paintings by Monet, Picasso, van Gogh, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas, and Rembrandt. • Their powerful film interpretation of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and string of other collaborations, including Boom! and Divorce His, Divorce Hers. • Burton’s outpouring of grief and longing in letters to Taylor as their relationship became strained by alcoholism and their frequent altercations. • A description of the heartbreaking final letter that Burton wrote to Taylor just before his sudden death. She counts it as her most treasured possession and keeps it by her bed at all times.
Josh Holloway, Matthew Fox & Evangeline Lilly Vanity Fair PicturesPosted on: May 14, 2010 | Comments Off
These pictures of the heart of the cast of LOST were shot back in February and won’t be published in Vanity Fair until the June issue. But we’ve got them for you first! I’m starting to feel the crazy-LOST-fans grief that the final season is nearly over and these sweet picture of Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway and Evangline Lilly made me feel a little bit better. I’m 85% sure the powers that be will leave Jack on the island replacing Jacob leaving Kate and Sawyer free to be together. At least that’s my theory about how it will end. Everyone else will probably be killed off coldly just like Sun and Jin. Thanks to the show creators for putting us all in a state of depression for days with that one, by the way. It sort of looks like they are having some crazy LOST-Hawaiian-beach threesome and that sort of makes me happy. Is that wrong?

Johnny Depp Names His Private Beach After Heath LedgerPosted on: June 2, 2009 | Comments Off
In the latest issue of Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp talks about his over-the-top-cool Bahamian private island and how he decided to name the six or seven private beaches.
The island, Little Hall’s Pond Cay (which he calls his “decompression”) features six different beaches, all of which Johnny named after important people in his life. There’s one named after his girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, their two children Rose and Jack, and his two mentors, Marlon Brando and Hunter S. Thompson. Johnny also dedicated a patch of water to the late Heath Ledger, calling it “Heath’s Place.” After his death, Johnny played one side of Heath’s character in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, so that the film could be completed. Johnny says of the island, “It’s my way of trying to return to normalcy. Escapism is survival to me. I don’t think I’d ever seen any place so pure and beautiful. You can feel your pulse rate drop about 20 beats. It’s instant freedom. And that rare beast—simplicity—can be had.” “And a little morsel of anonymity. Whenever I was getting frustrated about being ‘novelty boy’ and making movies, I told myself, ‘Calm down. I can come down here and disappear.’ I spent the Christmas season here with Vanessa and the kids. You can feed hot dogs to the nurse sharks in the Exumas — but it’s best to not swim when doing it.” He adds that, “Money doesn’t buy you happiness. But it buys you a big enough yacht to sail right up to it.” I’m not jealous of Vanessa Paradis at all. Romping around all day barely dressed and barefoot with Johnny Depp and two beautiful children in the sunshine for half the year ….and then heading back to their gorgeous French country house for the rest of the year. Who needs all that traveling and time zone changes?
