People magazine is backpeddling big time. After breaking the big news on Sunday that Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal had split…they are now trying to cover their tabloid ass by printing this.

“As much as everyone thinks they’re right there, they’re really not near the whole marriage thing,” a source close to the couple told PEOPLE last spring. “Jake would marry her tomorrow, but Reese doesn’t want to go there yet, even though he would like to.

LAST SPRING. Good reporting People. The truth is no one knows whats going on yet. It’s possible Reese doesn’t want to remarry…it’s also possible that she got tired of dating a gay man. Depends on which side of the Jake fence you live on.

People reported earlier today that Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal split after two years of being like, the perfect couple. The rumor spread faster than poison ivy all over the gossip sites, but it might not be true.

But a rep for Witherspoon has released a comment to rival gossip mag Us Weekly contradicting the rumor, saying simply: “It’s not true. They have not split.”

So, who knows? Reese is known for keeping her private life more than private…we’ll find out the truth when she is good and damn ready.
