“Spartacus” Star Andy Whitfield Has Cancer

Posted on: March 9, 2010 | Comments Off

Damn. I haven’t even started watching this show yet. I keep seeing the teasers and it looks hot. Really hot. But The Real Housewives of New York just started and I’m so deep into Kell on Earth that I feel like I’m have an anxiety attack along with Stephanie Skinner. Not to mention I’m two weeks behind on Project Runway. Now I feel really obligated to add this show to my DVR list.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield has been diagnosed with treatable Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, according to Starz Entertainment. The actor, who plays the title character, is beginning treatment immediately in New Zealand. “I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” Whitfield said in a release. Because of the actor’s treatment schedule, shooting on the second season of the Starz Original series will be postponed.

The one-year relative survival rate for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is 70 percent, and the five-year survival rate is 51 percent.

Sad news. 66 year-old actor/producer/director Penny Marshall has been diagnosed with a brain and liver tumor. A report from the National Enquirer states that she underwent brain surgery at a NY hospital on October 30th.

Penny received the shocking diagnosis after suddenly falling ill following a recent plane flight, said the source.

She was vomiting and thought it might be the flu. But she got the shock of her life when the doctors told her she had a tumor on both her brain and her liver. Doctors told her they needed to schedule her for surgery and that they’d need to take a biopsy to determine if she had cancer.”

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch Has Cancer

Posted on: July 21, 2009 | Comments Off

I know it’s concerning that Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boy’s has salivary cancer…yes apparently that does exist.

But what I find more troubling than the bands announcement that Yauch is ill is that OH.MY.GOD. the Beasties got OLD! When the hell did that happen? It’s so disturbing to watch the rebellious hero’s of your youth get grey hair and old man cancer.

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch (yawk) has what is described as a “very treatable” cancerous tumor in his salivary gland. An announcement came Monday from the group, which is canceling its tour dates and postponing an album release.

A statement says the tumor was found early. It’s confined to one area and is considered very treatable. He will need surgery and other treatment, but the statement says his vocal cords will not be affected. The 43-year-old Yauch is not only part of the pioneering rap group, but has also emerged as a film producer.

“Survivor” Winner Ethan Zohn Battling Cancer

Posted on: May 19, 2009 | Comments Off

Sad news as Survivor winner Ethan Zohn announced this week that he is fighting Stage 2 Hodgkin’s disease.

On April 30, Zohn was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s disease. The diagnosis came after months of unexplained itching and night sweats, originally thought to be a skin condition. Doctors discovered a swollen lymph node under his left clavicle, and a CT scan revealed a mass on the left side of his chest. Then, just last week, Zohn learned he is suffering from a rare form the disease called CD20-positive Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, for which he began chemotherapy last Friday.

“This is the ultimate game of Survivor,” Zohn, 35, tells PEOPLE exclusively, “and there’s really only one outcome, and that’s to win. There’s no other option.”

The good news is that Hodgkins has a high survival rate if treated and Ethan’s longtime fellow Survivor winner girlfriend Jenna Moraska says that she will stand by her man. “I will fight with every fabric of my being to get him through this.”
